Biological Wastewater Treatment (Aerobic & Anaerobic)

Biological wastewater treatment uses microorganisms to break down biodegradable organic matter in wastewater, either aerobically (with oxygen) or anaerobically (without oxygen). HG Chem in Medan designs biological WWTPs for domestic sewage (STP) and industrial wastewater, and supplies aerators and the HG ENZYME and HG SPEED decomposing bacteria.

Biological Wastewater Treatment (Aerobic & Anaerobic)

Biological treatment is used when wastewater contains a lot of biodegradable organic matter, such as effluent from kitchens, toilets, food processing or palm oil mills. Microorganisms consume this organic matter, reducing pollutant loads such as BOD and COD.

The anaerobic process needs no oxygen, so it does not require supporting equipment such as aerators or blowers; it is slower but energy-efficient and suits high organic loads. The aerobic process needs oxygen from aerators or blowers; it is faster and widely used as a follow-up stage. Many plants combine both.

Biological wastewater treatment falls into two broad groups: domestic wastewater treatment, or Sewage Treatment Plants (STP), and industrial wastewater treatment. Both are designed around flow rate, wastewater characteristics and the applicable discharge standards.

  1. 1Initial consultation via WhatsApp or phone to understand your needs and site conditions
  2. 2Site survey and water or wastewater sampling
  3. 3Water characterisation and selection of the right treatment method
  4. 4System design and quotation (capacity, process units, chemicals, equipment)
  5. 5Installation of equipment
  6. 6Commissioning: trial runs, dosing adjustment and process tuning
  7. 7Operational support and ongoing supply of chemicals or media

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between aerobic and anaerobic treatment?

Aerobic treatment requires oxygen supplied by aerators or blowers and works faster. Anaerobic treatment works without oxygen, needs no aerators, uses less energy and suits high organic loads.

What kind of wastewater suits biological treatment?

Wastewater rich in biodegradable organic matter, such as domestic sewage, kitchen and restaurant effluent, food industry wastewater and palm oil mill effluent.

What do HG ENZYME and HG SPEED do?

HG ENZYME and HG SPEED are bacteria that decompose organic matter in industrial and domestic wastewater, supporting the biological process in a WWTP.
