Water Filter Media: Activated Carbon, Silica Sand & Resin
Water filter media are the materials inside filter vessels that strain or absorb impurities from water: silica sand for solids, activated carbon for odour, colour and chlorine, manganese greensand and ferrolite for iron and manganese, and resins for hardness and demineralisation. HG Chem in Medan supplies these media together with water treatment accessories such as underdrain nozzles, UV sterilizers, ozonators and cartridge filters.

Each filter medium has a different job. Silica sand removes mud and suspended solids. Activated carbon adsorbs odour, taste, colour, chlorine and some organic matter. Manganese greensand and ferrolite help remove iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn), which turn water yellow or give it a metallic smell. Softener (cation) resin reduces the hardness that causes scale, while a combination of cation and anion resins produces demineralised water.
Filter media have a service life and need periodic replacement or regeneration. Common signs include water turning cloudy or smelly again, or output quality dropping even after backwashing.
Besides the media, filter performance depends on internal components such as underdrain nozzles and distributors/strainers that even out the flow, and on final disinfection devices such as UV sterilizers and ozonators.

Frequently asked questions
What does activated carbon do in a water filter?
Activated carbon adsorbs odour, taste, colour, chlorine and some organic matter from water. It is usually installed after a silica sand filter.
Which media treat yellow or iron-smelling water?
Yellow or metallic-smelling water is usually caused by iron and manganese. Media such as manganese greensand or ferrolite are used in iron removal filters to treat it.
When should filter media be replaced?
Replace or regenerate media when output quality drops, or water turns cloudy or smelly again even after backwashing. Service life depends on water quality and usage load.
