Chemical Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) Design & Build
Chemical wastewater treatment is a WWTP (in Indonesia: IPAL) method that uses chemicals to bind and settle pollutants through coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation and filtration. It suits industrial wastewater that contains heavy metals and little organic matter. HG Chem (PT Hgchem Indo Abadi) in Medan designs and builds chemical WWTPs and supplies the chemicals and dosing pumps they need.

Not all wastewater can be treated with bacteria. Wastewater with low organic content but containing heavy metals, fine suspended solids, colour or high turbidity is usually treated more effectively by chemical means. A coagulant neutralises the charge on fine particles so they can stick together, then a flocculant joins them into larger, heavier flocs that settle easily.
A typical chemical WWTP consists of a coagulation tank (rapid mixing), a flocculation tank (slow mixing), a sedimentation tank or clarifier to settle the flocs, and a filtration unit to remove remaining solids. pH adjustment is often needed for the reactions to work well, so the system is usually fitted with dosing pumps that inject chemicals in measured amounts.
We design each chemical WWTP around the characteristics of your wastewater, so the choice of chemicals, dosage and unit sizes fit your needs. Where the wastewater also has significant organic content, chemical treatment can be combined with biological treatment.

Frequently asked questions
When should wastewater be treated chemically?
Chemical treatment suits wastewater containing heavy metals, fine solids or high turbidity but little organic matter. If organic content is high, biological treatment or a combination of both is usually more appropriate.
What is the difference between coagulation and flocculation?
Coagulation is adding a coagulant with rapid mixing to neutralise the charge on fine particles. Flocculation is slow mixing (usually with a flocculant) so the particles join into large flocs that settle easily.
Does HG Chem supply chemicals for an existing WWTP?
Yes. Besides building new plants, we supply wastewater treatment chemicals and dosing pumps for WWTPs already in operation. Discuss your needs with us via WhatsApp.
