Water treatment equipment converts raw water into clean water or process water as required, ranging from sand filters, carbon filters and iron removal filters to softeners, demineralizers and Reverse Osmosis (RO). A water treatment train is usually built in stages. A sand filter removes mud and solids, an iron removal filter removes iron and manganese, and a carbon filter adsorbs odour, colour and chlorine. This stage is often called pre-treatment and produces clean water for general use.
For process water, treatment can go further. A softener reduces hardness (calcium and magnesium) to prevent scale, for example in boiler feed water. A demineralizer plant uses cation and anion resins to remove dissolved minerals. Reverse Osmosis (RO) pushes water through a semi-permeable membrane, separating most salts and dissolved substances, and is widely used for drinking water and industrial process water.

What is the difference between a softener, a demineralizer and RO?

Does an RO system need pre-treatment?
